Big Data & IoT Food Hackathon

The Microsoft Big Data & IoT Food hackathon, part of the Feeding The Accelerator program of the USA Pavilion at Milan EXPO 2015, is your opportunity to create innovative, network-based solutions to specific food and technology problems and hack for a good cause!

Assemble a team, and make new friends as you learn and use big data and internet of things technologies to solve real-world problems. You may want to learn a little more about coding beforehand to sharpen up (with resources like available), just to give yourself an edge. Here is your chance to make a difference in your community, and take an opportunity to experience a fun big data and IoT weekend!

Who Should Attend

This event is open to anyone interested in learning about Microsoft’s Big Data and IoT technologies, particularly:

    • Data scientists
    • Developers and Programmers
    • Data Architects
    • Makers
    • Designers


Over the course of nearly 2 days, you and your team will be engaged in building solutions to solve the given challenges. The two days are outlined as follows:


Day 1

9:00am Doors open and breakfast

10:00am Welcome & Challenge presentation

10:30am Teams building

11:30am Coding begins

13:00pm Lunch

14:00 pm Coding session

20:00 pm Dinner

Stay all night Coding (optional)


Day 2

7:30am Breakfast

8:00am Coding session

13.00pm Lunch

15:00pm Solution presentations begin

16:30pm Winners announced

17:00pm Event end



There are three challenges. These challenges are to show emergent trends or relationships between single or distinct data sets. The categories are:

  • Data Modeling – Produce a model to prove or disprove a relationship with the data
  • Data Visualization – Create a visualization to represent the data
  • Data & IoT – Combine hardware and Big Data to create Your IoT scenario


Technical Requirements

Attendees should bring the following:

  • Laptop or tablet running Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Visual Studio 2013 or Community Edition
  • A Microsoft Azure Subscription
